Is this the worst night in Oscar fashion history?

This week marks 20 years since Hollywood rolled out one of the most acclaimed red carpets of all time. On a night where A Beautiful Mind and the first Lord of the Rings triumphed, the 2002 Oscars—in true 2000 style—was replete with spaghetti straps, bare midriffs and informal evening wear.
At the time, former Cosmopolitan editor Marcelle d’Argy Smith dubbed it a “night of fashion blunders” before naming a few stars for their efforts. Julia Roberts looked ‘boring’ in a black Armani dress; Whoopi Goldberg, who hosted the ceremony, dressed as a sparkling peacock, ‘bringing a circus element to the process’; Barbara Streisand was “wrapped” in a velvet burgundy “wrap/tent/curtain”.
Supporting Actress of the Year Jennifer Connelly, who got more scathing reviews, opted for a pale tulle dress and a scarf that didn’t quite match (Smith describes the shade as “pale”. poo”, which Scripps described as Howard Press “slime-colored”). Versace colorful dress.

The actress’ heavy eye makeup and milkmaid braids helped the outfit earn a spot on “worst-dressed” lists for years to come.
Suzy Menkes, then longtime editor of Vogue at the International Herald Tribune, wrote in a typically scathing review of the night’s look that Paltrow, apparently braless, “looked like she was visiting her personal coach”. (She also described Connolly as “desperate like a drowning nymph”). Meanwhile, The Guardian’s fashion writer Jess Cartner-Morley wrote that the star “has a cutter” in “gap year braids, gothic eye makeup and chunky jewelry.”
Worse is to come. At the Vanity Fair Gala, ‘Meet Joe Black’ actress Claire Forlani wore only one thing to describe
